FROM CLOSET TO GRANDKIDS’ NOOK
Debbie Lovette, co-owner of Specialty Drapery, created a special niche for her grandchildren in a second-floor dormer room. She removed the closet doors and installed custom-built trundle beds draped with curtains that close like a tent.
SMART HOME TECHNOLOGY
Debbie and Tony Lovette, owners of Specialty Drapery, are making life easier for homeowners and helping them save energy costs with motorized window shades and drapes, as well as smart lighting controls and thermostats that can all be operated remotely through Wi-Fi.

Sleep is directly connected to light and dark. Nature intended for us to wake up with the sun, and go to bed at sundown. When sunlight enters our eyes, it causes our body’s melatonin level to drop and increases wakefulness. Darkness causes our melatonin levels to rise and induces sleep. This delays your brain’s release of the sleep-promoting hormone melatonin. Thus, the darker your room is, the more soundly you’ll sleep. Research has demonstrated that nighttime light exposure suppresses the production of melatonin, the major hormone secreted by the pineal gland that controls sleep and wake cycles. Therefore, a reduction in melatonin at night is associated with subjective levels of sleeplessness. But melatonin suppression has far worse consequences than simply poor sleep outcomes: it has also been shown to increase the risk of cancer, impair immune system function, and possibly lead to cardio metabolic consequences such as type 2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome, obesity, and heart disease. With serious consequences like these, preventing melatonin suppression should be a top priority in anyone’s healthy lifestyle.
At Specialty, we feature many types of room darkening window treatments. Call us to set up an appointment to see how we can help you sleep better.

Specialty Drapery is known for designing window treatments that meet the TOTAL needs of the homeowner/business owner. We were recently called to The Doubletree Hotel on West Franklin Street in downtown Richmond to look at some white stains on the draperies in the third floor conference space.
Originally, a corporate design team from out-of-state designed these soft striped draperies using an inherently fire retardant fabric for the striped part, but using a solid cotton fabric for the decorative band along the bottom edge. To meet fire codes that are in place for consumer safety, a topical fire retardant chemical was applied to the solid cotton band along the bottom. Continue reading
The long winter is finally over and the sun’s out. Summer has arrived! You’ve probably been ready for the summer for months, but is your home ready? Here are a few tips on getting your home summer ready.
Get your Home Summer Ready
Much like you can slip on shades for your eyes, you can opt for shades for your windows, to prevent glare and UV rays. There are several options for window treatments. Solar shades, wooden blinds, cellular shades and plantation shutters are just a few of the styles in which you can choose from. These window treatments will let the sun in but keep the heat out. Wooden blinds are very flexible throughout the summer. Their slats can be adjusted to control light and ventilation. Plantation shutters offer the same benefit. Solar shades not only offer protection from the heat and fading but also allow you to maintain visibility out of your window when the shade is down. With the right amount of sunlight entering your home, your cooling costs could be reduced during the summer months. Your new summer window treatments need to be functional but also look great and complement your home. If you need assistance with styles and materials, Specialty Drapery can help you.
